A lot of people have gotten themselves into trouble with credit card debt. When this happens it is important to be able to rebuild your credit. This is a card that works the same way as a regular credit card except that you have to make a deposit to ensure that you will pay your bills.
Secured credit cards are intended for people who have a poor credit history. They allow people to get a credit card which will allow them to prove that they can use it responsibly while at the same time ensuring that the credit card company doesn't lose any money. The way as secured credit card normally works is that you will have to make a security deposit that is equal to the amount of your credit limit. That way if you fail to make your payments they credit card company can use your security deposit to pay off your debts.
In most cases secured credit cards will come with very low credit limits. This isn't necessarily a bad thing since the overwhelming majority of people who use them have already demonstrated that they have a hard time using a credit card in a responsible manner. There are also usually fees associated with a secured credit card so it is not a cheap option. However if you using one can help you to rebuild your credit so that down the road you can get a regular credit card it can be a good idea to use a secured credit card.
One thing that you have to keep in mind if you use a secured credit card is that just because you have made a security deposit it doesn't mean that you can get away with not paying your bills. A secured credit card works like any other credit card; you are expected to make at least the minimum payment every month. If you fail to make a payment they will use your security deposit to pay it but they will also report it to the credit bureaus. That will make your credit even worse. A secured credit card is a chance to rebuild your credit, but not using the card properly will have the opposite effect.
There are quite a few things that you are going to want to look at when you are selecting a secured credit card. The biggest in most cases is to make sure that the card you get will make reports to the credit bureaus. They are not actually required to do this but most do. If you are using a secured card to rebuild your credit you definitely want to make sure that they do. Other things to consider would include, the fees involved, the interest rate and the amount of the security deposit that you have to make.
